One of the best ways to improve as a guide is to become a guest yourself.
During a business trip to Tokyo this past June, I unexpectedly had a free morning before my meetings. Rather than spending it in a café, I searched for a local experience conducted in English—and found a Kintsugi workshop just a five-minute walk from my hotel in Asakusa.
I had always wanted to learn about Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and gold, so I signed up only an hour before the class. Despite the last-minute reservation, the staff welcomed me warmly and everything was handled smoothly.
As both a traveler and a guide, I wasn't only interested in learning Kintsugi.

What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi (also known as Kintsukuroi) is the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with urushi lacquer and gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of hiding the cracks, it highlights them—turning breakage into something even more beautiful.
The philosophy behind Kintsugi is deeply connected to "wabi-sabi," the Japanese appreciation of imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity.
